Overview

Inactivated poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 are non-infectious forms of the poliovirus used in vaccines to induce immunity against poliomyelitis. These viruses, belonging to the *Picornaviridae* family, *Enterovirus* genus, and *Enterovirus C* species, are chemically treated (typically with formaldehyde) to eliminate their ability to replicate while preserving their antigenic structure. Vaccination with inactivated poliovirus stimulates the production of neutralizing antibodies that prevent viral attachment and entry into host cells, thereby providing protection against paralytic disease. The three serotypes are included due to the lack of cross-protection between them.
