Poliovirus Types 1-3 Antigens

Molecular classification
Viral Capsid Protein, Antigen
01

Overview

Poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 are the three serotypes of poliovirus, each defined by distinct capsid proteins (VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4) that determine their antigenic properties. These antigens are critical for immune recognition and vaccine development. The major antigenic sites are Site 1 (VP1 aa89–100), Site 2a/b (VPs 220–222/169–170), and Site 3. The three types do not cross-protect, necessitating trivalent vaccines. Neutralizing antibody titers against these antigens indicate immunity.
