Overview

Inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) contains purified capsid proteins from poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3. These proteins, primarily VP1, VP2, VP3, and VP4, are rendered non-infectious by formaldehyde treatment. They retain their antigenic structure, stimulating the production of neutralizing antibodies specific for each serotype, thus providing immunity against poliomyelitis without the risk of disease. The main function of these capsid proteins in the vaccine is to induce a protective immune response.
