Poliovirus types I–III antigens are the antigenic components of the three serotypes of poliovirus (PV-1, PV-2, and PV-3). These antigens, primarily located on the viral capsid proteins VP1, VP2, and VP3, are critical for inducing neutralizing antibodies and providing protective immunity against poliomyelitis. They are the targets of both inactivated (IPV) and live-attenuated (OPV) polio vaccines. The presence of D-antigen is essential for vaccine potency. Key antigenic sites include Site I, Site II, and Site III, with varying immunodominance across the three serotypes. Diagnostic assays detect these antigens for quantification and characterization of poliovirus.
