Polled intersex syndrome regulated transcript 1 (PISRT1)

Target
PISRT1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA

Overview

Polled intersex syndrome regulated transcript 1 (PISRT1) is a long non-coding RNA originally identified in the context of polled intersex syndrome (PIS), a disorder of sexual development in goats that combines the polled (hornless) phenotype with intersexuality. Early research suggested PISRT1 might play a role in this syndrome; however, later studies indicate that the causative factor is a 10.1-kb DNA deletion affecting the regulation of both PISRT1 and the gene FOXL2, with only FOXL2 definitively linked to sex determination in goats. PISRT1 does not have a proven function in mammalian sex determination and is not implicated in disease processes in established model organisms or humans. Like other long non-coding RNAs, PISRT1 may play regulatory roles in gene expression, but its precise function remains uncharacterized. PISRT1 is not a receptor, enzyme, or therapeutic target and currently does not have known drug interactions or safety concerns. It is best classified as a specific example of the broader functional category of long non-coding RNAs, the biological significance of which is an ongoing area of investigation.
