Pollen allergen Phl p 11 is a major protein component found in the pollen of Phleum pratense, commonly known as Timothy grass. It belongs to the Ole e 1-like protein family and is a significant trigger for Type I hypersensitivity reactions in sensitized individuals. Upon inhalation, Phl p 11 cross-links IgE antibodies on the surface of mast cells and basophils, leading to the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine, which cause symptoms of allergic rhinitis and asthma. In a clinical context, Phl p 11 is a key component of allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) products. These therapies aim to desensitize the patient's immune system through controlled exposure, promoting the development of regulatory T cells and the production of blocking IgG4 antibodies to mitigate the allergic response upon natural exposure.
Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) involves the repeated administration of the allergen to induce immunological tolerance, shifting the immune response from a Th2-mediated allergic profile to a Th1/Treg-mediated protective profile, thereby reducing IgE production and increasing IgG4 levels.
