PLK1 mRNA is the messenger RNA transcript encoding polo-like kinase 1, an essential serine/threonine-protein kinase involved in regulation of multiple steps of the cell cycle, especially mitosis. While "PLK1" is a canonical target and established oncogene and cell cycle regulator, "PLK1 mRNA" specifically refers to the mRNA molecule before translation. PLK1 mRNA is targeted by molecular therapies such as RNA interference (RNAi) drugs to reduce PLK1 protein levels in proliferative diseases, notably cancer. As a molecular species, PLK1 mRNA serves as the direct template for synthesis of polo-like kinase 1 protein, whose overexpression is associated with tumor progression and poor prognosis.
