Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase family member 8 pseudogene

Molecular classification
Other (Pseudogene)
01

Overview

The poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase family member 8 pseudogene is a non-coding genomic sequence that resembles the functional PARP8 gene but contains mutations or disruptions that prevent it from encoding the active poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase family member 8 protein. Pseudogenes arise by duplication or retrotransposition of functional genes followed by the accumulation of disabling mutations. This specific pseudogene does not produce a functional enzyme and is not considered a therapeutic target, biomarker, or disease gene. While the functional parental gene PARP8 is involved in NAD+-dependent ADP-ribosylation of proteins and related to processes such as DNA repair (for the broader PARP family), the pseudogene does not participate in these pathways.

Biological functions

Other (Most pseudogenes lack known biological function or are transcriptionally silent. Some act via RNA-based regulatory mechanisms, but functional evidence for this specific pseudogene is lacking.)
03

Disease associations

Other (Pseudogenes can sometimes play indirect roles in disease through regulatory effects, but there is no established disease association for this pseudogene.)
