Overview

Poly-N-acetylglucosamine (PNAG) is a linear polysaccharide composed of repeating N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) units linked primarily through β-1,6-glycosidic bonds. It is a key component in the formation of bacterial biofilms, particularly in Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, where it mediates cell adherence to surfaces and intercellular adhesion. PNAG acts as an antigen in bacteria-associated infections and is being studied for potential vaccine development. It also finds application as a hemostatic agent due to its properties that promote blood clotting.
