PolyA Polymerase (PAP)

Target
PAP
Molecular classification
Enzyme, RNA polymerase
01

Overview

PolyA polymerase is an essential nuclear enzyme responsible for adding adenine residues to form the poly(A) tail on eukaryotic pre-mRNAs. This process ensures proper mRNA maturation by enhancing transcript stability and facilitating translation. Structurally conserved across species but functionally diversified via multiple isoforms in vertebrates, PAP operates through substrate-induced conformational changes within its multi-domain architecture. Its activity is crucial not only biologically but also biotechnologically—for example in synthetic mRNA production used in modern therapeutics such as vaccines.
