Polyadenylate-binding protein cytoplasmic 5 (PABPC5) is a member of the poly(A)-binding protein family in humans, encoded by the PABPC5 gene. It binds the poly(A) tail located at the 3' end of most eukaryotic mRNAs, and is involved in the regulation of mRNA metabolic processes within the cytoplasm, including mRNA stability and translation. PABPC5 is one of several cytoplasmic PABPs—the major being PABPC1 in somatic tissues, while PABPC5 is considered X-linked and less well-characterized. Unlike some other PABPs, PABPC5 lacks certain domains (linker and PABC domain) and its specific regulatory functions and physiological significance remain incompletely understood. The PABPC5 gene is located within a region on the X chromosome associated with premature ovarian failure; thus, it is considered a potential candidate gene for this disorder. There is no evidence that PABPC5 is a therapeutic target, nor are there known drug interactions, mechanisms of drug action, or established biomarker roles for this protein.
