Polyamine Metabolism

Molecular classification
Metabolic Pathway
01

Overview

Polyamine metabolism refers to the cellular processes that govern the synthesis, catabolism, and transport of polyamines—small organic molecules containing two or more amino groups. The most common naturally occurring polyamines in mammals are putrescine, spermidine, and spermine. These molecules are essential for cell growth, division, gene regulation, DNA stability, protein synthesis, and a variety of other fundamental biological functions. Dysregulation is implicated in several diseases, particularly cancer, making it a therapeutic target.
