Polyamine Metabolic Pathway

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Metabolic Pathway
01

Overview

The polyamine metabolic pathway encompasses the biosynthesis, catabolism, and transport of polyamines—small aliphatic polycations such as putrescine, spermidine, and spermine. These molecules are ubiquitous in living organisms and play essential roles in cellular functions including nucleic acid synthesis, protein synthesis, cell growth, and proliferation. The pathway is tightly regulated to maintain intracellular homeostasis through coordinated control of enzyme activity and transport systems. Dysregulation of the polyamine metabolic pathway has been implicated in cancer development/progression, immune response modulation, and other diseases. Because rapidly proliferating cells require increased levels of polyamines, the pathway represents a rational target for therapeutic intervention—especially in oncology where inhibitors targeting key enzymes have been developed or proposed.
