Overview

Polyclonal anti-poliovirus type 2 antibodies are a heterogeneous population of immunoglobulins (primarily IgG) derived from multiple B-cell clones that recognize various epitopes on the Poliovirus type 2 (PV2) capsid (CDC, 2023). These antibodies are essential components of the humoral immune response, generated following vaccination with inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) or oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV), or through natural infection (WHO, 2022). Their primary biological function is the neutralization of PV2 by binding to the viral surface and sterically hindering its interaction with the host cell receptor, CD155, thereby preventing viral entry and replication (He et al., 2003). In clinical settings, these antibodies are not typically viewed as therapeutic targets but rather as therapeutic agents or diagnostic markers; for instance, they are found in pooled human intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) used for passive immunization (StatPearls, 2023). Monitoring the titers of these antibodies is a standard biomarker for assessing vaccine-induced immunity and supporting global polio eradication initiatives (WHO, 2022). Safety concerns regarding the administration of products containing these antibodies include potential hypersensitivity reactions or interference with the efficacy of live-attenuated vaccines (StatPearls, 2023).
