Polyclonal B cell activation

Overview

Polyclonal B cell activation refers to the process by which multiple B cell clones are stimulated simultaneously, often resulting in the production of a broad range of antibodies (not just those specific for a particular pathogen). This can occur during certain infections (such as trypanosomiasis or malaria), exposure to bacterial products, or mitogenic stimuli. Unlike monoclonal activation (which targets a specific antigen), polyclonal activation can lead to elevated antibody levels (hypergammaglobulinemia), and may result in less effective long-term immunity due to delayed or impaired specific antibody responses. It is not a molecular target but a process describing a state of the immune system.

Mechanism of action

Generalized activation of B lymphocytes, often through pathogen-associated molecular patterns or mitogens, leading to the induction of hypergammaglobulinemia (overproduction of immunoglobulins) in some infectious or autoimmune contexts.
