Overview

The Polymerase polyprotein Pol is a multifunctional viral polyprotein found in retroviruses such as HIV, translated as part of the Gag-Pol polyprotein precursor. It encodes key enzymatic activities necessary for viral replication, including reverse transcriptase, protease, and integrase functions. The Pol region is essential for viral genome replication (via reverse transcription and integration) and for proteolytic processing of viral proteins; it is proteolytically cleaved to yield mature, functional viral enzymes after translation. Due to its central role in viral replication, it is the principal target of multiple classes of antiretroviral drugs[2][3][6].
