Overview

Polyoxyethylene-polyoxybutylene is a family of synthetic, amphiphilic block copolymers composed of polyoxybutylene and polyoxyethylene segments. These molecules are not biological receptors or enzymes but act as water-soluble, nonionic surfactants and gel-forming agents. They are typically produced by condensing butylene oxide with an organic compound containing reactive hydrogens to create a polyoxybutylene polymer of at least ~1200 molecular weight, then further condensing ethylene oxide to produce the amphiphilic block structure. Their primary use is in formulation science: to form strong, thermoreversible hydrogels and to stabilize emulsions or solubilize active pharmaceutical or cosmetic ingredients. Polyoxyethylene-polyoxybutylene copolymers are valued for their ability to form stable, clear "ringing" gels at room temperature, which can serve as vehicles for topical, transdermal, or other pharmaceutical delivery systems. They are not known to interact with biological macromolecular targets[1][4].
