Polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 13 (GALNT13)

Target
GALNT13
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Glycosyltransferase
01

Overview

Polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase 13 (GALNT13) is an enzyme belonging to the glycosyltransferase family that initiates O-linked glycosylation of mucins and other glycoproteins by transferring N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) from UDP-GalNAc to serine or threonine residues on substrate proteins[1][2][7]. This catalysis generates the Tn antigen, which is important in cell biology and immunology and serves as a precursor for various mucin-type O-glycan structures[1][6][7]. GALNT13 is expressed particularly in the brain and central nervous system, where it may contribute to neurogenesis via glycosylation of PDPN[1][5]. Disease associations include cancers such as lung cancer, and classic Ehlers-Danlos syndrome[1][8].
