Overview

Polyphenols are a large and diverse group of naturally occurring compounds characterized by multiple phenolic structural units. They are widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom and include several major classes such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, stilbenes, and lignans. Over eight thousand distinct polyphenols have been identified in foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, tea, coffee, chocolate, herbs and spices. In plants they serve protective roles against ultraviolet radiation and pathogens; in humans they exhibit antioxidant properties that help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. Research has linked dietary polyphenol intake to potential health benefits including reduced risk for cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers, diabetes complications and neurodegenerative disorders—primarily through their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. However "polyphenol" does not refer to any single molecular entity nor does it function as an individual therapeutic target like an enzyme or receptor would; instead it encompasses many structurally related molecules with varied biological activities depending on their specific chemical structure.
