Overview

A polyribosome (polysome or ergosome) is a supramolecular assembly consisting of a single mRNA molecule with multiple ribosomes attached to it, each actively engaged in translating the mRNA into polypeptide chains[1][3][8]. This arrangement increases translational efficiency and allows for the rapid production of numerous protein molecules from a single transcript[1][3][7]. Polysomes can take various shapes—linear, helical, or circular—depending on the organism and context, and their dynamic formation is crucial for regulating gene expression at the translational level[1][8]. Polysome formation reflects the cell's translational activity and is important for cell growth, development, and response to environmental stimuli[2][6]. While not a direct therapeutic target, alterations in polysome structure or function can be indicative of changes in cellular physiology or disease states[2]. In summary: "Polysome formation" does not denote a canonical molecular target but rather a fundamental process of protein synthesis by which multiple ribosomes translate a single mRNA molecule in parallel[1][3].
