The polyribosyl-ribitol phosphate (PRP) capsular polysaccharide of Haemophilus influenzae type b is a high-molecular-weight polymer composed of repeating units of D-ribitol and D-ribose linked by phosphate groups. It plays a crucial role as a virulence factor by protecting the bacterium from host immune responses, particularly phagocytosis and complement-mediated lysis. The PRP polysaccharide is used in conjugate vaccines to induce an immune response against Hib, thereby preventing invasive Hib diseases like meningitis and sepsis, especially in children under five years old.
