Target intelligence / Profile preview

Polyribosyl-ribitol-phosphate Capsule of Haemophilus influenzae Type b (PRP)

Target
PRP
Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, Capsular Polysaccharide
01

Overview

The polyribosyl-ribitol-phosphate (PRP) capsule is a polysaccharide structure that forms the outermost layer of encapsulated Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) bacteria. This capsule is a critical virulence factor, enabling the bacterium to evade host immune responses and cause invasive diseases. The PRP polysaccharide serves as the antigenic component used in all licensed Hib conjugate vaccines. These vaccines link purified or size-reduced PRP to carrier proteins to enhance immunogenicity, especially in infants.

Mechanism of action

Antibodies bind to PRP, promoting opsonization and complement-mediated killing of Hib; Hib conjugate vaccines elicit an antibody response against PRP, providing protective immunity.
