Overview

Polysaccharides are high-molecular-weight carbohydrate polymers composed of monosaccharide units linked by glycosidic bonds. They may be linear or branched, and can consist of one (homopolysaccharide) or multiple (heteropolysaccharide) types of monosaccharide units. They are abundant macromolecules in nature, serving as energy stores (starch in plants, glycogen in animals), structural materials (cellulose in plants, chitin in fungi and arthropods), and have diverse roles in cell signaling, adhesion, and immune function. Polysaccharides do not constitute a single druggable biological target but, rather, a wide class of structural biomolecules with broad functional relevance in biology, nutrition, and industry.

Biological functions

Energy storage (e.g., starch in plants, glycogen in animals)Structural support (e.g., cellulose in plant cell walls, chitin in fungi/insects)Immune modulation (in some microbial or medicinal polysaccharides)Prebiotic function (dietary fiber, gut microbiome support)

Disease associations

Other (Too broad; however, individual polysaccharides like heparin play roles in specific disease contexts, e.g., thrombosis, but "polysaccharides" as a class is not associated with a single disease)Some specific polysaccharides exhibit anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antioxidant, and hypoglycemic activities in research contexts
