Overview
The polysaccharide synthesis locus (psl) is a gene cluster in Pseudomonas aeruginosa responsible for the biosynthesis and export of the Psl exopolysaccharide. Psl is a crucial structural component of bacterial biofilms, contributing to initial attachment, biofilm architecture, and resistance to antibiotics and host immune responses. The psl locus consists of 12 genes (PA2231–PA2245), with 11 being essential for Psl production. Targeting the psl locus or the Psl exopolysaccharide is a potential anti-biofilm therapeutic strategy.
