Overview

A **multisynaptic reflex pathway** (also known as a polysynaptic reflex pathway or arc) is a type of neural circuit in the central nervous system in which sensory input travels via afferent neurons, connects through one or more interneurons (relay neurons), and ultimately activates or inhibits motor neurons to produce a reflexive effect. Unlike monosynaptic (two-neuron) reflex arcs, polysynaptic circuits involve multiple synapses and interneurons, enabling greater flexibility and more complex protective, modulating, or integrative responses—such as the withdrawal reflex in response to pain. These pathways are fundamental for the rapid processing of sensory stimuli and coordinated motor output, often bypassing higher order brain centers for speed but still subject to modulation by higher CNS regions.
