PorA is a major outer membrane protein (OMP) of Neisseria meningitidis, functioning as a porin and serving as an important target for protective host immune responses. The "P1.4" designation refers to a specific serosubtype defined by the sequence of one of its variable regions (VRs), particularly VR2, which forms part of the surface-exposed loops on the protein. It facilitates the transport of small molecules across the bacterial outer membrane and is a key candidate for vaccine development due to its high immunogenicity. Antigenic variation occurs through point mutations or small insertions/deletions in variable regions, allowing immune escape. Phase variation can also modulate expression levels.
