Porins are a class of transmembrane proteins that form large, water-filled channels in the outer membranes of Gram-negative bacteria, mitochondria, and chloroplasts. They facilitate the passive diffusion of small hydrophilic molecules such as ions, sugars, and amino acids across the membrane. "Porin A" typically refers to a specific porin protein (such as OmpF or OmpC in *Escherichia coli*), but can also denote any member of this family. They play crucial roles in antibiotic uptake/resistance since many antibiotics enter Gram-negative bacteria through these pores. Alterations or loss-of-function mutations can confer resistance.
