Positron-emission tomography (PET) enhancers are not a single molecule or receptor, but rather refer to agents—primarily radiotracers or radiopharmaceuticals—that enhance the imaging capabilities of PET scans. These agents are designed to improve the visualization and quantification of metabolic, biochemical, or molecular processes in tissues and organs during PET imaging. They act as "enhancers" by targeting specific physiological pathways or receptors relevant to disease processes such as cancer, neurological disorders, or cardiovascular disease. Common examples include 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), 18F-sodium fluoride, 15O-water, 11C-methionine, and 18F-fluoroestradiol.
