Positron emitting activity refers to the presence and behavior of radiotracers that emit positrons as they undergo radioactive decay. These substances are central to positron emission tomography (PET), a functional imaging technique widely used in medical diagnostics. The emitted positrons interact with electrons in tissue, leading to annihilation events that produce pairs of 511 keV gamma photons, which can be detected externally. PET scans are used to detect cancerous tissues, evaluate brain function, and assess cardiac perfusion.
