Potassium–transporting ATPase alpha chain 1 is the catalytic subunit of the gastric H+/K+ ATPase pump, responsible for exchanging hydrogen (H+) and potassium (K+) ions across the apical membrane of parietal cells in the stomach. This process is essential for gastric acid production and proper digestion. It is a key target for proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are widely used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcer disease.
Hydrolyzes ATP to transport K+ ions into cells while exporting H+ ions out, creating an acidic environment in the stomach lumen.
