Potassium bicarbonate (KHCO₃)

Overview

Potassium bicarbonate is an inorganic salt (KHCO₃), appearing as a white, odorless crystalline powder, highly soluble in water but insoluble in alcohol. It dissociates in solution to provide potassium ions and bicarbonate ions, and is used for electrolyte replenishment, as an antacid, fire extinguisher powder, agricultural fungicide, and leavening agent in baking powders. Medicinally, it aids in managing potassium deficiency and neutralizing gastric acid, but it is not a molecular target (such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter), nor is it a signaling molecule or biomolecular entity.

Mechanism of action

Electrolyte repletion: Provides bioavailable potassium ion for physiological needs. Antacid: Neutralizes excess gastric acid (HCl + KHCO₃ → KCl + CO₂ + H₂O). Fungicidal: Disrupts fungal hyphal walls and shrinks conidia via bicarbonate action
