Target intelligence / Profile preview

Potassium calcium-activated channel subfamily M alpha member 1 (KCa1.1)

Target
KCa1.1
Molecular classification
Ion channel, Potassium channel, Voltage-gated ion channel, Calcium-activated potassium channel
01

Overview

KCa1.1 (KCNMA1) is the alpha subunit of the calcium-activated BK (Big Potassium) channel, a large conductance potassium channel activated by membrane depolarization and increases in intracellular calcium. It plays a crucial role in regulating smooth muscle tone, neuronal excitability, neurotransmitter release, and auditory processing. Dysfunction of KCa1.1 is associated with neurological disorders such as paroxysmal nonkinesigenic dyskinesia, epilepsy, and Liang-Wang syndrome.
