Potassium calcium-activated channel subfamily M regulatory beta subunit 2 (KCNMB2) is an auxiliary beta subunit that associates with the pore-forming alpha subunit (KCNMA1) of large conductance calcium-activated potassium (BK or MaxiK) channels, greatly modifying their gating kinetics and calcium sensitivity. KCNMB2 confers rapid and complete inactivation to the channel and is especially relevant in tissues such as smooth muscle and neurons, where it modulates physiological processes like muscle tone and excitability. Although KCNMB2 is fundamental to functional diversity of BK channels, it is not typically the direct molecular target of current pharmacological agents; rather, it modulates the properties of the core BK channel[1][2][5].
