Potassium Channel (Gastric Parietal Cell)

Molecular classification
Ion channel, Potassium channel, Voltage-gated potassium channel, KCNQ channel, KCNE subunit
01

Overview

The potassium channel in gastric parietal cells is a membrane protein complex primarily composed of KCNQ1 and KCNE2 subunits. It is located on the apical membrane of parietal cells and plays a crucial role in gastric acid secretion by recycling potassium ions (K⁺) to the gastric lumen. This recycling is essential for the sustained activity of the H⁺,K⁺-ATPase (proton pump). Activation of these channels is stimulated by secretagogues and represents a potential drug target for controlling gastric acidity. Inhibition of these channels can reduce gastric acid production independently or synergistically with proton pump inhibitors.
