01

Overview

Potassium channel proteins are integral membrane proteins that selectively facilitate the flow of potassium ions (K⁺) across cell membranes. They are found in virtually all living organisms and play essential roles in maintaining the resting membrane potential, shaping action potentials, controlling cell volume, and modulating cellular excitability. Their tetrameric structure includes a selectivity filter with a signature sequence (TVGYG) that provides precise coordination sites for dehydrated K⁺ ions. Dysfunction or mutations in potassium channel genes can lead to various diseases, making these proteins important drug targets.
