The potassium channel protein subunit alpha is the principal pore-forming component of potassium (K⁺) channels, which are transmembrane proteins responsible for selective K⁺ ion transport across cell membranes. These channels play a critical role in regulating membrane potential and cellular excitability in various tissues, including the nervous system, heart, and muscles. Dysfunction or genetic mutations affecting these proteins have been linked to various diseases including cardiac arrhythmias (e.g., long QT syndrome), epilepsy, ataxia, and others.
