Potassium channel subfamily K member 3 (KCNK3) is a pH-dependent, voltage-insensitive background potassium channel that regulates resting membrane potential in various cell types. It is highly expressed in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues such as heart, adrenal gland, pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMCs), and kidney. Mutations or loss-of-function variants are linked to heritable forms of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
Pharmacological activation can reverse experimental PH models; current research is focused on identifying KCNK3 activators.
