Potassium channel subunit alpha refers to the primary pore-forming subunit of potassium (K+) channels, which are integral membrane proteins that facilitate the selective transport of potassium ions across cell membranes. These channels are crucial for numerous physiological processes including neuronal signaling, cardiac function, and cellular homeostasis. They form tetrameric structures to create a functional ion-conducting pore and are classified into several families based on their gating mechanisms and structure, including voltage-gated (Kv), calcium-activated (BK), inward rectifier (Kir), and two-pore domain (K2P) channels.
