Potassium channel tetramerization domain-containing protein 19 (KCTD19) is a member of the KCTD protein family, characterized by a BTB/POZ domain that facilitates protein-protein interactions, often as an adaptor in ubiquitination pathways. KCTD19 is highly expressed in the testes, where it localizes to the nuclei of spermatocytes and round spermatids, and is essential for meiotic progression during spermatogenesis and male fertility in mice. Loss of KCTD19 function results in defective meiosis and subsequent apoptosis of spermatocytes, leading to male infertility. KCTD19 interacts with partners such as ZFP541 and histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1), suggesting a role in chromatin modification and transcriptional regulation specific to male germ cell development[1][4][5].
