Target intelligence / Profile preview
Potassium chloride is an essential inorganic salt used primarily as an electrolyte replenisher to treat and prevent hypokalemia (StatPearls, 2023). As the primary source of the potassium cation (K+), it plays a fundamental role in maintaining the resting membrane potential and regulating the excitability of nerve and muscle cells (PubChem, 2024). Potassium ions are crucial for cardiac function, skeletal muscle contraction, and the maintenance of intracellular osmotic pressure and acid-base balance (NIH, 2023). In clinical practice, potassium chloride is administered to counteract potassium loss often induced by loop or thiazide diuretics, or as a result of renal or gastrointestinal disorders (Mayo Clinic, 2024). Because of its narrow therapeutic index, precise monitoring of serum potassium levels is required to avoid hyperkalemia, which can lead to fatal cardiac arrhythmias (FDA, 2022). While potassium chloride is a medication rather than a biological target like a receptor or enzyme, its administration directly impacts the activity of potassium channels and the sodium-potassium ATPase pump (DrugBank, 2024). It is available in various formulations, including oral tablets and intravenous solutions, to suit different clinical needs (MedlinePlus, 2023). Proper dosing is critical, as rapid infusion or excessive intake can result in life-threatening electrolyte imbalances (StatPearls, 2023).
Potassium chloride provides exogenous potassium ions to replenish intracellular and extracellular concentrations. These ions are essential for maintaining the electrochemical gradient across cell membranes, which is critical for nerve impulse conduction, muscle contraction, and normal cardiac function (StatPearls, 2023; PubChem, 2024).
