Potassium-chloride transporter member 5 (KCC2 / SLC12A5) is a neuron-specific chloride-potassium symporter that plays a critical role in establishing and maintaining the chloride ion gradient in neurons by ensuring low intracellular chloride concentrations. This function is essential for synaptic inhibition, neuronal excitability regulation, and neuroprotection against excitotoxicity. Mutations or reduced expression of SLC12A5/KCC2 are associated with neurological disorders such as epilepsy and certain forms of encephalopathy.
