Potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7)

Target
K2Cr2O7
Molecular classification
Inorganic compound, Hexavalent chromium compound, Oxidizing agent
01

Overview

Potassium dichromate is a crystalline inorganic compound containing hexavalent chromium, widely used in industrial applications such as leather tanning, pigment production, and wood preservation (PubChem CID 24502). It is not a biological receptor or a therapeutic target; instead, it is recognized as a potent allergen and a Group 1 human carcinogen (IARC). In clinical practice, it serves as a diagnostic tool in patch testing to identify individuals with chromium hypersensitivity, a common cause of occupational contact dermatitis (StatPearls). Upon entering the body, it acts as a strong oxidizing agent, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species and the formation of stable DNA adducts, which contribute to its mutagenic and cytotoxic properties (NIH). Consequently, research involving potassium dichromate focuses on its toxicological profile and environmental impact rather than its potential as a site for drug intervention.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable as a therapeutic target. As a toxicant, it undergoes intracellular reduction from Cr(VI) to Cr(III), generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and forming DNA-protein crosslinks and DNA adducts (PubMed PMID: 12069329).
