Target intelligence / Profile preview
Potassium homeostasis refers to the body's ability to maintain a stable concentration of potassium ions (K⁺) within narrow physiological limits, both in total body content and specifically in the plasma. This regulation is essential for numerous vital processes, including maintaining membrane potential, action potential propagation in excitable tissues, hormone secretion and action, and fluid/electrolyte balance. Disruptions in potassium homeostasis can lead to hypokalemia or hyperkalemia, both of which are associated with increased mortality risk due to their effects on cardiac excitability and other systemic complications.
