KCNJ3 encodes an integral membrane protein that functions as an inward-rectifier type potassium channel, allowing potassium ions to flow more easily into the cell than out of it. It is a member of the G protein-coupled inwardly rectifying potassium channels (GIRKs), specifically known as GIRK1. It regulates heartbeat, forms heterotetrameric complexes with other GIRK subunits, and couples with neurotransmitter receptors in the brain to modulate neuronal excitability. Mutations or dysregulation are associated with atrial fibrillation and potentially other neurological conditions.
