Overview

Potassium ion (K⁺) is a monoatomic cation derived from the element potassium. It is the major intracellular cation in animal cells and plays essential roles in numerous physiological processes, including maintaining membrane potential, generating action potentials, regulating water balance, and supporting muscle contraction and nerve function. It is used therapeutically to treat or prevent hypokalemia (low potassium levels), which can result from various medical conditions or treatments. Potassium ions move passively through specific pores or channels in cell membranes. These include Ion Channels and Ion Pumps. Potassium channels are tetrameric proteins forming a central pore selective for K⁺.
