Target intelligence / Profile preview
Potassium nitrate is an inorganic salt used primarily as a desensitizing agent in oral care products to treat dentin hypersensitivity [PubChem CID 24434]. Its primary mechanism of action involves the elevation of extracellular potassium ion concentrations around intradental nerve fibers, which leads to a sustained state of depolarization [DrugBank DB09511]. This depolarization prevents the nerve from repolarizing and subsequently firing in response to external stimuli such as thermal, chemical, or tactile changes, thereby effectively blocking the transmission of pain signals to the brain [NCBI StatPearls]. While it is highly effective in dental applications, potassium nitrate is also used as a food preservative and has historical applications as a diuretic and anti-asthmatic agent. In the context of drug discovery, it is classified as a therapeutic chemical agent or active pharmaceutical ingredient rather than a biological target such as a protein receptor or enzyme [NIH PubChem]. Systemic exposure is generally low in dental use, but high concentrations in the blood can lead to electrolyte imbalances or oxidative stress on hemoglobin.
Increases extracellular potassium ion concentration around nerve fibers, leading to sustained depolarization and the inhibition of action potential conduction in intradental nerves.
