Potassium transport ATPase alpha chain 1, also known as the gastric H+/K+ ATPase alpha subunit or proton pump, is a membrane-bound enzyme subunit encoded by the gene ATP4A in humans. It plays a central role in acid secretion in the stomach by exchanging intracellular hydrogen ions (H+) for extracellular potassium ions (K+) using energy derived from ATP hydrolysis. It is the primary target for proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
