Potassium-transporting ATPases are membrane-bound enzymes that use the energy from ATP hydrolysis to transport potassium ions (K⁺) across biological membranes, often in exchange for other cations such as sodium (Na⁺) or protons (H⁺). These enzymes play a crucial role in maintaining cellular ion homeostasis, membrane potential, and overall cell function. Subtypes include Na+/K+-ATPase and H+/K+-ATPase.
ATP hydrolysis drives conformational changes in the enzyme, leading to the translocation of potassium ions across the membrane. Involves phosphorylation of a conserved aspartate residue.
