The potassium-transporting ATPase alpha chain is the catalytic subunit of the H+/K+ ATPase, a P-type ATPase responsible for exchanging hydrogen and potassium ions across cellular membranes. It plays a crucial role in gastric acid secretion (ATP4A) and potassium homeostasis in non-gastric tissues (ATP12A). This enzyme is the target of proton pump inhibitors, a class of drugs used to reduce gastric acid production.
