Potassium-transporting ATPase alpha chain 1

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Transporter, P-type cation transporter, Ion pump
01

Overview

Potassium-transporting ATPase alpha chain 1 is a membrane-bound enzyme subunit crucial for ion transport and cellular homeostasis. It is associated with the gastric H+/K+ ATPase (ATP4A), which acidifies gastric juice, and the Na+/K+ ATPase (ATP1A1), which maintains sodium and potassium gradients across plasma membranes. It is essential for various physiological processes, including nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and osmoregulation. Dysfunctions in the protein are linked to several conditions, including hypertension and neurological disorders. The protein is also a drug target for gastrointestinal diseases like GERD.

Mechanism of action

Alternating access mechanism powered by phosphorylation/dephosphorylation cycles. Conformational changes between E₁/E₂ states allow selective binding/release/occlusion/translocation of specific cations coupled with hydrolysis/transfer/phosphorylation events.
